PE Marching Band and Sport Waiver

I want to teach because i want to help other kids. I want to be a health and PE teacher because i feel that these two classes get taken for granted and schools are starting to cut PE or give students an easy way out. The schools give the kids the choice at the high school level to take a sport waiver or "PE Marching Band." This means that the students get the choice to get credit for the PE class without taking the class. This is not a good thing. With the way that obesity is taking over our country, students need to have PE in their lives so that they can learn about different excersize strategies and what is best for them to work out in. If students are not getting this information and develpoing healthy habits when they are young, they are more likely to never develop the habits and therefore their children have a better chence of becoming unhealthy. This causes a downward spiral for our society. I am against students waivering out of PE whether they are an athlete or not. This is an experience that every student must have in their lives.

Luke, I agree with your stands on the marching band/P.E. waiver. I think it’s very important for students to not only exercise, but to have an understanding of healthy habits and the best way for students to create a healthy lifestyle. I also agree that students who are in athletics should not be able to opt out of Health and P.E. classes and receive credit for that class. In order to receive credit students must attend class. By letting students opt out of classes it is sending the wrong message. If teachers want their students to be honest young adults then as teachers we need to reinforce honesty.

Should grades for P.E. be included in the overall GPA of students? Should 4-sport althletes or athletes "in season" still need to take P.E.? Should parents of unhealthy kids be notified?

That last comment was from Dr. Langholz. I'm not sure why I'm identified as "background." hmmmm...
